Kojic Acid– Kojic acid is a compound that is commonly derived from various fungi. Kojic acid is often used as a skin lightening agent because of its effects on a protein known as tyrosinase. By inhibiting the tyrosinase protein’s ability to make melanin, kojic acid is able to prevent skin pigmentation, which can help lighten the skin’s tone.

Arbutin– Arbutin is a molecule extracted from the bearberry plant that prevents the formation of melanin. Arbutin blocks tyrosinase and keeps dark spots at bay. Arbutin is the naturally occurring cousin of hydroquinone.

Bearberry– Bearberry extract is made from the leaves of the bearberry shrub. Bearberry leaves have long been used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties as well as its anti-bacterial effect. The polyphenolic compounds found in bearberry leaves have been shown to have strong antioxidant properties that protect the skin from the visible signs of aging like premature wrinkles and fine lines caused by free radical damage.

Green Tea Polyphenols- Green tea leaves contain polyphenols. The antioxidants provided by green tea are powerful against free radical damage. Green tea improves elasticity & increases moisture levels in the skin. The polyphenolic compounds present in green tea also provide natural anti-inflammatory effects to the skin. When applied topically, these compounds help address inflammatory conditions of the skin, including acne, dermatitis, and rosacea.

Emblica– A naturally occurring chemical that lightens the skin. Emblica is also an antioxidant and stops the breakdown of collagen.

Silybum– Silybum is essentially milk thistle seed. It contains high levels  of vitamin E & fatty acids, including linoleic acid. It’s antioxidant benefits help protect skin from environmental stressors. In addition to these effects, milk thistle also soothes and moisturizes the skin.
